Programs

The AIC’s consortium of university partners serves as
the cornerstone of the PAIR framework, backed by the governments of both countries and enabling interdisciplinary research teams to tackle complex
societal issues.

ABOUT PAIR

Supported and funded by the governments
of Indonesia and Australia, alongside the Australia-Indonesia Centre's university partners, PAIR exemplifies a model of collaborative excellence.

PAIR uses the power of the consortium model of universities to combine academic rigour with government, civil society and industry knowledge to co-design and deliver research projects that generate findings which can assist decision-makers when dealing with the significant challenges of our times.

The research follows three principles – place-based, to ensure activities are focussed and researchers can engage meaningfully with communities, interdisciplinary to ensure complex problems are tackled from all angles, and demand-driven so that projects are designed with the end users in mind.

The PAIR Sulawesi program has cash and in-kind co-investments committed to date of more than $35 million to investigate key thematic areas including climate change and coastal communities. Research findings were delivered in the key areas of transport, rural health and commodities under the PAIR South Sulawesi program with funding of $16.3 million.

Initiated as a pilot in South Sulawesi in 2019, PAIR’s success led to its expansion in 2024, with equal co-funding from both governments. This growth underscores the program’s effectiveness in delivering impactful, sustainable solutions to shared challenges.
